could anyone tell me how downtube gear levers actually
work...how do you know which lever does what
i havent riden one of these bicycles for years

Although they are a thing of the past ..they are still available, and the lever mounts need to be brazed on to the downtube of a more modern frame.
One lever moves the chain acoss the rear casette... and the other lever moves it across the front chain wheels.
The one disadvatage with this, is that you have to remove your hand from the handlebar to change gear.
If you follow the cable from either shifter, back to the lever.
You will then know which one operates what.
