I think Falcon has mis-quoted Brewer's Phrase & Fable - my edition 1963. I think the quote should be "intercourse" not "encounters". Also he spells 5 down's forename with two "n"s whereas Britannica has only one. It makes for a more interesting crossword in the sense of Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times".
