Can anyone help me, I want to do a star chart system to get my kids to behave themselves. I need advice for a tried and tested method of chores, rewards etc. My kids are 4 & 6 years old.
Many thanks

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.you need to be VERY consistent. Have a few basic rules which you go over calmly with your child, better still write the rules down so the child knows what they must do to earn a sticker. Once the child has done the correct behaviour to earn the reward give the reward immediately infront of the child (let the child put the sticker on the chart) don't leave it till the next day or the learning will not be as strong. Whatever you do...do not evr take a sticker away or cross it off if the child then does something very naughty after having been given a reward or this devalues the system and the child will think whats the point of trying if i could loose a sticker/star. This is one of the most common reasons for this system failing. If the child is badly behaved and does not deserve a sticker tell them explicity what they have done so as not to get a sticker and then mark the space where they would have got a sticker (on the chart) with a cross. Don't put a sad face as some people do as there are a few children out there who find having a sad face quite stimulating and rewarding. If possible tie it in with a bigger reward e.g when you have 30 stickers you can choose a magazine to buy in the shop. You must set a realistic reward you can do...if you don't fulfill your promise again the child will loose interest. Have a list of ONE or TWO difficult behaviours which result in the child not getting the sticker . Write the TWo 'DON'Ts' down and maybe draw a picture by them to reinforce what it is the child shouldn't do if they want to get a sticker. Another top tip is try to catch the child being good and reward as much as you sensibly can early on so the child gets hooked. Also use 'superpraise' this is when you get a visitor or partner to look at the chart and comment positively on how well the child is doing to you (when the child is in the room or within earshot).
good luck with it

If you need any more advice I suggest you phone your local education authority and ask to speak to an educational psychologist they are usually happy to give informal advice over the phone about things like this even if your child doesn't see the psychologist/need to see a psychologist.

i dont think that the bahaviour and reward charts r that good, i have 3 children and didnt need anything like that, my kids are 2 4 and 6, they r great kids, help with the cleaning and everythin, i think if u make the borin things fun they like to join in, if not, they have to respect the fact that the parents r in charge and what we say goes, conversation and understandin works best,
