Ken Kesey was apparently so miffed about the change in narrative from Chief to McMurphy that he sued the producers, or someone.

What was the outcome?

In 1975 the film of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was released and at the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences it won best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, and best screenplay adaptation all the major awards it could win that year. Kesey sued for a more just proportion of the royalties and ultimately settled for 2.5% of the movie's net, which was expected to give him an eventual revenue of $750,000 to $900,000.
