Got it all (1a Buccal was hard . . .) Am I the only one who didn't know this word?? My questions are, as usual, HOW are the following the right answers? 14a seems to be Dad's Army. DA is the 'lawyer' but where's the policeman?
26a is 'latitude' as the definition of 'Freedom', but how obtained? In 47d 'Assam' is the place of tea (definition) but where does the 'NCO takes it' come from? It's interesting how one person's sticking points are so easy-peasy for other people, and vice versa . . . .

So sorry! 14a Lawyer and policeman host TV programme (4,4)
26a Freedom is what the upwardly mobile gain when left to take the lead (8) 47d An NCO takes it in place of tea (5). Still hoping for help with how the answers were formed. Incidentally, the clue for 1a was 'Cheeky' Conservative in a club, dancing (6).
14a Dads Army ...DA (lawyer) DS (Detective Sergeant) ARMY (host)

26a Assam ....A SM (Sergeant major) AS (in place of)

Great help with Dads Army & Assam - thanks. But remember

26a is 'latitude' as the definition of 'Freedom', but how obtained?

Would be most grateful!
Attitude is what the Yuppies get.

Left takes the lead = L Attitude
Question Author
Thanks again, but can you account for the double 't' in 'attitude'? Given the spelling of 'Latitude', how does the setter get rid of the spare 't'?
take (T)he lead?
Question Author
To all helpers on the 'latitude' question . . . . My brain has just woken up. 'Altitude' is what upwardly mobile people get, and you bring the 'l' in front to 'take the lead'. Duh . . .
47a A S(ergeant) M(ajor) takes 'it'. It = S(ex) A(ppeal)
Question Author
Of course. V. satisfying. Thanks.
A previous explanation of 26 ac wasn't quite correct, I think: the upwardly mobile, of course, get ALTITUDE, which becomes LATITUDE when the left takes the lead.

How right you are woodstockbit, & when my brain woke up on 18.5.09 at 11.03, I realised it! But don't go feeling silly - I went & told one of those horticultural crossword solvers that I thought a particular type of chrysanthemum was called 'gentleman's buttons' . . . it wasn't.

Thanks for your input!
