as there has always been THE one, it was a perpetual loop

i think you'll find that this neo does die as he has done something that none of the others did ie chooses to save trinity rather than save mankind and is eventually 'consumed' by agent smith(s).

smith is a program and every program must have a purpose or they are deleted so neo gives in to him and allows smith to kill him.as smiths sole purpose was to defat 'the one' (which he has now done) he is deleted and the matrix is re-set.

Neo doesn't give in to Agent Smith. He joins with the machines to beat Smith as he was a renegade program trying to take over everything. Anyway, Neo doesn't die so they can make a 4th film somtime. If they want.
