Am I right ?? Were the original episodes, those with Michael Bates as Blamire, broadcast devoid of the inane canned laughter which accompanies the programmes nowdays.

I don't know about those early episodes - but Last of the Summer Wine is not - and apparently never has been - accompanied by canned laughter. The completed shows are shown to a live audience, and their reaction is what is heard.
Mushroom25 is right about the laughter. It is genuine audience reaction.
You can hear the audience laughter, and clapping, in this early episode.
