ChuckFickens: that was going to be my next question as to the wages. If it costs so much more then hopefully you earn more than the average American but that is not the case?
I doubt we get paid more on average. I think the minimum wage is higher in the UK, but professional people with the same job would normally have a much better standard of living in the US as far as I know.
it depends... health treatment in particular is free...ish in Britain (ie you pay for it via your taxes), so that's quite a big plus the USA doesn't have. Britain is, despite everyone's grumbling, a pretty prosperous country, but of course we are going through the same downturn now as the USA is. Good news for my son, who can at last afford to buy a flat (not a whole house) of his own.

Savannah is a lovely place. And Charleston
Chuckfickens.I think the US gallon is more than the UK gallon approx 1/4 of a gallon more.
According to Wikipedia an imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, while a US gallon is smaller at 3.785411784 litres
we amy pay more for things over here but we have the nhs and other things which the USA dont plus have you seen some of the slums they are expected to live i other there
As of November last year the average wage in the UK. was $35,796 23,764
In answer to the original question, the average cost of petrol (gasoline) is 89.1p per litre, accordging to the Petrol Prices website: http://www.petrolprices.com/ - this is about US$5.06 per US gallon, I think.
One other point to remember when compairing uk to us fuel prices the 'standard' us price is for 88ron, with the highest priced 'premium' fuel being 92ron, and the uk its 95ron for the 'standard' fuel and 98ron for 'premium'
the RON is worked out differently though so Ive heard, so its not as inferior as the figures suggest
