1a, Give account of French writer (8)

Could it include DEFOE? I think it is a name of a person. There is DEFORGES, but I am 100% sure the B is correct.

Any help?

Of course, my F is incorrect.

Re Defoe not being French, it is cryptic you know, and the word french could be "le" for example. Anyway, he sounds French (lol).

De is French for "of" + scribe ( writer )
