Backup all your important documents onto CD and reinstall Windows from the CD, formatting your hard drive in the process.

This is the "requires very little expertise" sledgehammer approach.

If you haven't already got it, "acquire" a copy of Windows XP.

Windows XP probably isn't the best option for a 6 year old PC. Check your system against the recommended requirements before installing to ensure your pc will cope.  This is what Microsoft recommend for XP Home Edition:

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*

Wouldn't the average 6 year old PC more than satisfy the above??
