my neighbour has just said he will get my dog put down for barking
My dog barks from time to time when someone runs by
i have had the same dog and same neighbour for 11 years.
No one else has said to me they have a problem with the dog.
Can my neighbour get my dog put down

no - dog cant be put down but can me removed from you. Has he reported to police? Can you muzzle dog when its out - then it cant bark.

You must be very upset by your neighbours threat, nor can he have it put down.
If you have been neighbours for such a long time , has he complained before?
If your dog barks all the time , I can see why he thinks it is a nuisance.
However if your dog barks from time to time, thenthat to me is normal dog behaviour.
You cannot stop a dog from barking unless you keep it inside more, or put a muzzle on outside.Neither of these ideas is very good for the dog.

If you feel intimidated by your neighbour and are afraid of what he may do, you have no alternative but to report his threats to the police.Go to your local police station and seek advice if you are so worried, do not let this man frighten you.

thanks for your answers the dog is out side from 8am to 3pm when i return from work.
no other neighbours have a problem with my dog and as he is a siberian husky all the kids love him.
he is no danger to anyone because he has a great nature and my garden has a 6 ft fence all the way round.

I can see from your answer that your dog is in the garden from 8am to 3pm.
As a dog is by nature a pack animal, the simple truth is he is lonely being left on his own for 7 hours, put plenty of his favorite toys outside.The fact is he is your dog & if he is an annoyance to a neighbour who is perhaps retired & at home all day, the neighbour has every right to complain to the local authority as it does constitute a disturbance of the peace.

thanks but the dog has been left out side for a number of years has toys and a kennel and is used to being left alone.

I have asked all the neighbours if they have a problem with my dog and the all said no.

we are talking about the dog barking no more than a few times during the day how can that be classed as a nuisance.

How do you know the dog only barks occassionally?
He cannot get the dog put to sleep, but he will no doubt report you to the RSPCA and they will monitor the situation. Failing that the council may become involved as there is a noise abatement issue. If you are sure the dog only barks occassionally - you have no worries, but if it is proved that the dog is barking on and off all the time, they will start proceedings. Why not shut the dog inside so that the walls muffle noise, or put the dog into day kennel.
I have a dog, and understand it is difficult to stop a dog barking all day when out which is why I gave up work when ours started. I have also had someone prosecuted for having a noisy dog - why should your neighbours peace and quiet be shattered if he is telling the truth.
It may be that he is just grumpy and is aggrevating the dog though.

He is just a grumpy old man i no the dog barks a few times as my neighbours have said this when i asked them.

But they said no more than any of the other dogs in the neighbouring houses.

What is an abatement issue/order and what action can the council take.

If the dog did bark all the time i would address the problem
but i will not let my dog suffer if he is not breaking the law

Has your local council got a dog warden?

It may pay you to involve him/her and give you any advise.
I had such a neighbour as yours and when I offerred the dog warden to visit my neighbour and give them advise on what is reasonable the situation became very amicable.
It is very important to try and maintain a reasonable relationship with your neighbour..

Let me reassure you straight away: your neighbour cannot have your dog put down for barking. That is a fact.

If anything, the most that could be done is that you could perhaps be fined by your local council. But that would take quite a process to be gone through first.

However, there's clearly a problem which, not only for your peace of mind and your neighbour's, but also for the sake of your dog, you will need to address immediately.

It's not for me to try to tell you what you should do with your dog but I would strongly advise you to not only speak with your neighbour to at least try to appease him but to also contact your local Dog Warden for advice.

To be honest, other people's dogs barking can be really annoying, especially when there's no one there to control them or stop them. I've had this in the past where a neighbours dog barks every time you walk down your own garden or step outside your back door. I don't think it's particularly fair on the neighbour or the dog.

Why can't the dog be left inside your house during the day where he's less likely to annoy people?

You say you wont let your dog suffer, but youre presumably willing to let your neighbour suffer? Maybe your neighbour isn't grumpy, maybe he's just reached the end of his tether?

Whether the RSPCA or the Council do anything, I would say that you should maybe do something yourself to prevent the annoyance. Leave the dog indoors? Use a muzzle?

i can see it from both sides as i used to have a dog that barked like yours and was reported by my neighbour, funny it was only reprted after we had a falling out but hey, and i am also in the situation where i live of having a dog barking for what seems like non stop, and sometimes ive heard it at 3 in the morning, there is nothing worse than it being quiet, as it is where i live, and then having a dog breaking the silence all the time, it is very annoying and gets on peoples nerves, especially as you say its alone from 7-3, neighbours youve asked say it does bark sometimes, are you sure they arent just being "kind" to you when actually it does get on there nerves, good luck whatever happens

To let everyone understand i no my dog barks sometimes but thats what dogs do.

I have cctv cameras in the back garden and a dog door installed so the dog can go out in to the garden or stay inside.

The cameras show the dog isnt barking and i work for myself and pop home at least 3 to 4 time during the day to walk the dog.

I have contacted the local dog warden and he said that the police/council would only get involved if the dog was barking all the time.

And they would have to prove it before thry took any action.
