For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Which format? You can either create an Alpha channel, or, if it's index coloured, specify that you want transparency when saving. Try this...
Alpha - Next to the "Layers" tab, click on the "Channels" tab. At the bottom, right click on the "create new channel" icon. This will create an alpha channel. The tranparency on this, is specified by gradients of white to black. White (256,256,256) is completely transparent, Black (0,0,0) is completely opaque. Save as a 32 bit TGA.
Indexed - Turn off the background layer. On a new layer, create your image. Go to File>Save for web. Change the "settings" to PNG-24, check the transparency tick-box, select the amount of colours you require in the pallette. Click save
Hope this helps, experiment a bit until you get it mastered.
1. Create a new layer in your layers palette
2.Open the scan of the layer you want to superimpose over the background layer, and drag it into your original document. It should be in a layer you can turn on & off in the layers palette.
3. In the layers palette you have a dropdown menu, (this should say "normal" at the moment. Pull it down to "Multiply" This should have the effect of making all the white areas of that layer disapear, and darker areas superimpose over the layer below.
You can build up your image wih multiple layers, adjusting the transparency and blending modes for each layer.
For more control over transparercy, when dealing with different colours etc, double click the layer in the layers palette, which will bring up the layer style palette. Explore the various options here and have fun!
