If you Google police caution uk and log onto www.homeoffice.gov.uk, it will give you the details you require.

My understanding is that all arrests lay on file indefinately and a CRB would uncover this.

Would only be on an Enhanced CRB.
There are 3 categories of caution; A, B and C. Category A is the most serious and category C is the least.
All cautions will appear on a Standard CRB until they are stepped down at which point they are only on Enhanced CRB checks. Category A cautions are stepped down after 10 years whereas category B and C are stepped down after 5.
