someone at work today. Wasn't very nice. How do you deal with your staff (if you have any) if their attitude stinks?

His job isn't rocket science and he doesn't deal with the actual public side of things. He just doesn't know how to talk to other members of staff. I told him he needs to improve the way he communicates but I will be putting him on a Communication Skills course.
He may have aspirations to be a senior manager one day and is just trying to throw his administerial weight around, i suggest you rearrange your communication system to keep him out of the loop for the time being to teach him that he is not indispensible and also to show that he needs to learn basic manners and change his attitude if he does intend to progress
He joined my team rececntly after 2 of my original members retired. Those 2 were the bees knees and I really miss them.
Unfortunatley, TOO I can't fire him. I have to go through a 3 tier discipline system before I can request that he is fired. I am going to give him a further warning if it happens again.

You must make sure you cover your own back as he'll probably claim you are being unfair.
It is difficult to say your 2 retired staff were the bees knees,as clearly they must have been there a long time ,and you miss them. Don't say that it will be turned around to you were friends with them and you don't like him.You have to be seen to be treating all your staff the same.
Did the person he worked for prior to him joining your team have a problem with him? Have you checked the HR records?

The "miscreant" is probably some muppet who's nigh on minimum wages by the sounds of it and who may possibly be lacking motivation, let alone the social skills to communicate on an acceptable level.
There are different ways of "disciplining" people, it used to be called man management in the pre PC days, and is one of the most difficult skills to master. Some people "have it", others never will as long as they have a hole in a certain part of their anatomy as my dear old dad used to tell me, although he didn't use the word "anatomy", despite the word beginning with the same letter!
