Evening all - anyone else remember Dixon of Dock Green or I am the 'ancient' of the group?. Haven't been ignoring you. Went out for the day to the new 'Grand Plaza' Shopping Centre just opened in Tavira - locally the eighth wonder of the world, as it has moving staircases and glass lifts. Nothing like it has been seen here before. Then on to the salt flats - a natural conservation area and a must for twitchers. Doc H.H. the Isla Canela is a very pleasant spot.
Well found some of this E.V's clues rather weak. Have quote and author and have finished bar 2 plus a couple of uncertains and a 'will someone please explain the answer'. The latter, 15a, have answer but what has wool got to do with it? Think I have 32d and 40a, but can't make sense of 37a. I have ?ed? and thus can't get 31d . So far the same answer as 19a would fit in.

Christiana, read the answer to 15ac backwards and look in Chambers, as far as 37ac is concerned the SEE indicates a letter, it is the fish that returns. 31d could also be in my opinion an insipid white wine!
I most certainly remember Dixon of Dock Green! Evening All, bending knees reverentially. In fact I get my bus pass in november!! So i suspect Christiana we are all of an age!!

Thanks for assistance Doc HH. I made the mistake of thinking 40a couldn't possibly start with that combination of letters. And couldn't 'see' the definition for 37a. Despite my ignorance, have now finished.

I had to tackle this one in fits and starts, rather than having a good, long session at it (due to marking, re-homing a tortoise, supervising assorted forgetful artisans, oh yes -and the day job): nevertheless, enjoyed it a lot. Since I restarted EV about six weeks ago, I've found them a little less contrived than some Listener offerings - and sometimes more of a challenge, too.

Warm thanks to all who welcomed me last week. I would drink a toast to EV N & Cers with the bottle that came courtesy of the Inquisitor recently, but Ms S and one of her chums sequestrated it the day it arrived. However, it's no hardship to substitute a single malt. Cheers!

I'll raise a glass with you, Speravi. In my case a nice Alentejo red. Alentejo wines don't seem to be well known outside of Portugal, but I find them more than just acceptable.

Welcome back,Speravi. Good to see I'm not the only one in N&Cers who tackles the Inquisitor as well.. Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars, of cousre I remember them too, back in the days when the world was black and white.

How about ice on the inside of bedroom windows, linoleum and rugs, what on earth was central heating, double glazing or even fitted carpets!?
Making toast on a toasting fork over an open fire, crunchy, but the carbon was good for the dietary system.

How about going through University and graduating without massive debts? In my case I received maximum grant of �309.00pa, which with the money earned during vacations with quite a variety of jobs, and the odd evening working in pubs, financed me for the 7 years, and still enough available to run a car, for the last 3 years a TR3A!!

Good times, but I feel for the youngsters of today, but they do seem to have a different mindset, mine was always "out of debt, out of danger!". I even hated having a mortgage, had 2 which were settled asap!

Speravi, welcome again, we are a friendly group, feel free to N&C and tipple with us.

Hello all, sorry for my absence. Oh, the joys of weaning - sleepless nights back again. My university days definitely left me in debt - I basically financed myself through working up to 4 jobs during holidays and student loans - no parental help was forthcoming, so no choice really. As to my age - well, I've been a teacher for 12 years and went directly into that from my physics degree followed by a PGCE - so you can work it out!
Not much time (hence not much progress) on this week's offering so far. Hot chocolate in DC for me!

Hot chocolate would be just the job, PG - perhaps with a marshmallow on top? I managed to come through uni without a debt, though it was many years ago!! Now got a son in first year at Durham, so we are having to finance his drinking - perhaps he needs weaning too!! (off the beer)
Have got a little time tonight to look at EV now I've finished my tutoring session. Trying to make sense of some of the thematics. Might need a "hand" later to measure what I've done.
