Cake Q2!

I'm making a '1' shaped birthday cake and I'm about to cover it in rolling icing for a smooth finish. Now, I'm NOT using marzipan under it, so do I need to cover the sponge in melted jam or anything to make the icing stick?
Thanks

It will stick better with warmed sieved jam spread on the cake or dab some butter icing on the cake. I am in middle of making OH's b'cake "-the best ever choc cake in the world" take 2 big bars of 70% choc and a pint of double cream and make myself vey sick scraping bowl. Have a lovely 1st birthday.( well not you obviously but the little one)

Thanks I'll do that.
That sound yum! I never scrape the bowl completely then i can get my fingers in it! I feel I'm a little old to just stick my head in it and lick it. Also, if there's no-one there to see you, it doesn't contain any calories! Happy days. Lol!
I must adnmit I feel a little queasy now. Just got to finish the choc ganache and put 12 chocolates on the top. Bleuch hope I feel better tomorrow.
