Is there a special name for French onion soup with cheese on top and possibly croutons? I'm looking for how it would appear on a French menu. Maybe a straight translation such as my Franglais: "potage de Lyonaisse avec fromage". Please advise.

The cheese (traditionally gruyere) on top is ,art of the dish, straight translation is
"la soupe l'oignon" thought |I suppose you could add avec fromage to it?
Sounds good --how do you make it please?
its lush, this is a good recipe - i don't add the cognac but i'm sure it tastes good with it

On a menu in France it would be 'soupe l'oignon' the cheese and croutons would automatically be served with it.
As it's a recipe from Lyon it's sometimes called 'Soupe Lyonnaise' or even Soupe l'oignon lyonnaise'
Once you've tried home made french onion soup - you won't like any other

I omit the wine & this is the first time i've heard of cognac being added
