As background, I was born in East London (hence I'm a 'London Don') and moved out 10 miles into Essex in the late 1940's (29/12/49 to be exact) to a new estate built after World War II. My father worked in the Fire Brigade and was based on London Docks throughout the War, so I don't recall him being around much in my early years.
My senior school, Buckhurst Hill CHS, suffered me for seven years, and proved quite successful. I ended up as a prefect and House Captain. I decided not go to University, but entered the Civil Service instead. There I remained for 38 years, where I enjoyed such a wide variety of tasks in different Ministries/Departments that I often thought of creating a new nameplate for my door, bestowing the title -- JO ATMON ( 'Jack of all Trades, Master of None').
Alas, the school was closed by Essex County Council in the 1980's, because of a perceived drop in the birth rate in the local area, hence fewer schools would needed. Not for the first time their predictions proved incorrect and they had to build a replacement 20 years later. I will always remember in particular two brilliant teachers who sparked off keen interests in History and Geography, which manifested in my life-long hobby of Philately (now reduced to collecting First Day Covers only).
