Photoshop CS3 - Black + White to Colour?

For about a week I have had Photoshop CS3 and I have been steadily working out its features and still learning of course. It is an amazing piece of software for photo edits no doubt.

Now what I like doing is changing colours on pictures because I am artistically inclined in such an area, and once before I had changed a black + white image to colour by just using the brush tool (and on this software), but I've forgotten how I did it. Whenever I try to recolour with the paint brush (my preferred method), all colours come up in black and white (and any tone within), which I know should happen because it's a greyscale image.

But how do I change it so the colours are actually the colours I want?

in what way? I hope this is correct, any who.

You can create your own swatches, and then by using image> mode > grayscale. then in greyscale choose duotone which will allow cmyk, 4 color whatever tones you'd like.

Or, image> adjustments> this will allow you to bend and curve however you'd like. just make sure gamut warnings on.

I think when you go to Adjust Hue/Saturation there's a box labelled Colorize - tick that and it will come out of grayscale (it will be all one colour) and you can then do what you want with the paintbrush.

I don't use photoshop at home
but - it sounds like you've changed the colour depth

if you greyscale the photo - the palett is just that - grey

increase the colour depth and that should do it

alternatively add a new layer
(you should always work on copies - just in case)

Hmm sorry guys but none of these ways work, anything to do with colourising the image is greyed out and I can't go onto it - maybe the picture is locked to greyscale. The image was greyscale by default (or at least the friend who wanted me to edit it has changed it to black and white).

I tried layers to begin with because I thought that would work (and it usually would) but it didn't this time, just different shades of black and white.

I've tried it with another black and white photo and I can colourise it fine, so I'm assuming it's just this photo.

Before you start, you need to increase the colour depth of the image to the maximum, and re-save it.

After that, although it will appear in mono, it will actually be a colour picture, and you will be able to paint away to your heart's content.

I wasn't sure on the colour depth part rojash, but i found out my solution easily. I went to mode and it was on greyscale mode, and I didn't know about this section, so now I can recolour any black and white image. I'm so happy now!
