Can anybody think of an excuse for not having done a morning's work on the computer?  Would it seem improbable to say I'd somehow lost it all?

Depends on what else you'd been doing?
A very plausible excuse in a low-tech office; in a more advanced one they'd send the IT people in to retrieve it all.

Computers "lose" things all the time and it's so easy to delete things that to say you lost it all would be a good excuse. Be careful though if your company has a server which keeps all valubale records on (most large company's do) then could just say well thats ok we will just go and get it off the server.

I prefer the good old "well there was a lot of queries over the phone this morning so I thought it best to deal with them first" Always works for me as there is no record of calls.

Can you tell i do absolutely no work ALL day?

Your Dog ate it? Your PC was abducted by aliens and has returned, flustered but unharmed. A virus attack.Amnesia, you or it. A phantom pregancy. Need any more ?

I would go with MunkeyBoy's excuse!

Say you're part french and you took the five hours off to maintain working week homogeneity.
I'm not getting paid. Will that do?
Say that you started working, then you got an attack of existentialist angst after realizing that you were in fact just a cog in a huge machine.
