In terms of units ; 5 will generally put a man at the legal drive limit and 3 for a woman.

The best policy is to have 'none for the road'.

And as all human beings are different you cannot simply state x number of units. Some people may process alcohol quicker than someone else. Also be very aware of what 'a unit' of alcohol actually is ; Unit = Volume of alcohol(ml) X strength (%) / 1000

It depends on size and metabolism generally it's 80mg per litre of blood so the bigger you are the more blood ,the more you can drink. I've got a very handy spreadsheet that you can use plug in drinks, weight and elapsed time and you can tell whether you would be over the limit at a certain point in time depending on consumption, If you let me have your email somehow I'll send it to you. Another major factor is the dissipation time, ie 1 unit takes 1 hour to dissipate so you also have to take account of time. for example if you drink 3 pints of normal lager in 3 hours then you have had 6 units but 3 are gone so you have actually had 1.5 pints, probably within the driving limit. For this reason I think the limit is far to high, you can drink a surprising amount and still be clear.
The best plan is not to drink at all when driving. It's not worth the guilt and shame if you were to run someone down and be branded as a 'drunk' driver. It must be bad enough running someone down when you're sober.

ok thanks everybody. i dont ever drink and drive i know the consequences of that and wouldnt risk it. i was just wondering what it took beause it seems to me that a lot of peple are unaware of how much is legal.

You can drink well well below the 'stated legal limit' and get arrested and charged if it is demonstrable that the alcohol which you did inbibe contributed to dangerous driving or an accident.
