Circles in the desert

On a recent daytime flight from Kenya to London, we saw lots of lines of circles in the desert of what we guessed was southern Libya. What are they?

Irrigation systems. A sprinkler pipe is driven around a central pivot point, by a motorised contraption, forming the circle.
