Thinking about eating problems and underweight/picky eaters brought back memories of the Virol my mother used to spoon down me in the 50's. Mmmmm! Does it still exist? Not that I need it, mind. I think it worked too well in my case

Euurgghhh i remember virol... my sister struggled that much to avoid her daily spoonful it ended up all in her hair most times..awful tasting stuff
The answer to your question is no, it doesn't still exist. I tried to get some several years ago after a nasty bout of flu. Don't know when it went out of production, but, like you, I have fond memories of it each winter and at other times too if I'd been ill. Bit like Marmite, you either loved it or hated it, I loved both!
It was advertised as a 'bone marrow extract'!
I wish you hadn't told me that heathfield!

Thanks all.
I'm sad you can't get it but I expected that as I did look on ebay (the source of all good things) and they were only selling empty jars.
Snowy - don't let heathfield spoil it for you. I don't care what it was made of. And I love Marmite too.
You can still get gripe water though!
Virol, is simply malt extract which you can buy from health food shops etc.
Go in to Boots or Timothy White's and ask for Cod Liver Oil and Malt. That's Virol without the actual name.
