If you don't mind using chemical products, Roundup wll most certainly do the job. Use it from a spray tank at about 6 ounces per gallon of water (six to one if you don't need that much). Apply it once in the earlier morning or later afternoon. Roundup is used on many crops here in the U.S., is food crop safe and leaves no soil residue, so I, personally, have no compunction about its use...

thankyou clanad i might try it, but do i need to lift the flags or can i just spray it between the flags once again thanks
The chemical is absorbed by the plant's leaves... no need to get to the roots...
You can buy Roundup ready mixed in a handy pump and go container at Homebase and B&Q but remember to use it in dry weather only.
I use Roundup for my flags, but I do have to re-apply each spring. It will only attack plants which have emerged, so it is best to wait for quite a lot of growth to appear (or use it several times throughout the summer). It's advantage is that it does not poison the soil, or leach to adjoining beds (but beware of spray blowing on to other foliage).
Run some salt along them, preferably rock salt if you can get it, and use it on any deep rooted weeds, but if used on lawns only a pinch directly on the centre of the weed or you will have a dead patch. Cheap,eh?
Bleach does the trick for me - and because it comes in a bottle with a nozzle, it's easy to apply it directly between the flags.
I use Sodium Chlorate from Wilkinson's or the Poundshop.
It's cheap, makes up into gallons and kills everything green or growing.
Use it in one of those spray bottle usually used for ant killer and such and just spray between the flags.
