walking in the field today with my dog i came across a nest with four eggs in it still warm they were a little darker than the skylarks i found before can anyone say if these were skylarks eggs or have i stumbled on some other bird that nests in the ground
Many Birds nest on the ground such as Lapwings, Partridge, Pheasants etc to name but a few. If you keep out of sight within range of the nest, eventually the 'owner' will turn up and you will be able to identify the Bird in question. If you have a camera you could take a photo for identification later.
Dog walkers - the bane of a ground nesting birds life. I bet they wish they'd never evolved to nest on the floor.
Perhaps you can tell me, does a sign saying "Ground birds nesting - please keep your dog on a lead" read as "Please let your dog race round wherever it likes, f*** the wildlife" to dog owners? It seems to round our way.
