The PS2 has been around for a while now and is not as technologically advanced as the XBox. That makes little difference at the moment but may limit game advances on the PS2. The PS2 has been around for longer so its games are cheaper and there are more of them, and some gems at that, such as GTA Vice City, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid 2, Stuntman and Ratchet and Clank. The XBox was launched in March 2002 in the UK but some classics have already emerged such as Halo, Buffy, Amped, Splinter Cell, with more on the way. The PS2 is slightly more expensive but comes with a built in DVD player (I think you need to buy a dvd controller). The XBox has a very large hard drive for storing games positions whereas you need to buy memory cards for the PS2.
So in my opinion go for an XBox. Or buy both!
I've got a PS2 - but what about the Nintendo Gamecube? They're only 130 now, and Super Mario Sunshine looks worth buying the consol for alone! (there are plenty more brilliant games out for the Gamecube though, before you start thinking it's a one game wonder!) I intend to get one as soon as i've got a spare 200 burning a hole in my pocket! (with a couple of games that is!)
I havent got either, so no bias here. I'd say the PS2 and Xbox are evenly matched. Better games, and more of them on PS2, but Xbox is technically more advanced. They are bringing out some good games themselves though. Dont think much of the GameCube, and rumour has it Nintendo are packing up making consoles to concentrate on making games for the Xbox.
Nintendo wont be making any games for the Xbox in the forseeable future, especially since Microsoft has essentially just stolen one of Nintendo's most high profile development companies, Rare in a deal worth more than $300,000,000.
The PS2 has already won the console war in terms of popularity, with a sales lead over the Gamecube and Xbox of more than 11million units. There are a good number of great games for the system too. The PS2 is definately a stable and low risk investment for the the next 2-3 years before the PS3 hits us (rumoured to be in 2006).
The Xbox on the other hand is struggling at the moment and lost Microsoft more than $16Million in the last three months alone. However, they are determined to make the console a success and have the funds to support it. Additionally, as has been mentioned, the Xbox is considerably more powerful and it's got games like Halo, Jet Set Radio Future and Splinter Cell released for it, all of which are top games.
The Gamecube has Nintendo's genius behind it, and everybody knows that, whilst their games aren't always the coolest, they're always innovative and extremely fun to play.
As long as you don't mind waiting between Nintendo's releases, and being somewhat neglected (Japan and US get Gamecube games up to 6 months before they're released in Europe) then the Gamecube is well worth the measly 129.99 asking price.
Take an objective perspective on the situation, by doing that you'll be able to decide which console is best for you.
