Coniston Shoreline

I have just enjoyed two days in Coniston, Cumbria, and am curious to know whether the shoreline of the lake is natural? If this is the case can anybody tell me of any interesting mineral/fossils/artifacts that are to be found there?

Also, does anybody know of any good websites that I can refer to in order to improve my rock identification skills?

Quite natural Billy. It was formed in glacial times and I believe the outlet was blocked by material the glacier left behind.,called a moraine.

It is near the boundary of volcanic rocks, so plenty of minerals( Coniston Coppermines) or Greenburn lead and silver, but no fossils, and very old slates which are poor in fossils.

I would suggest you dont start with these Lakeland rocks but pick an easier area 'cos things get a bit complicated. Good hunting.
