I have a number of trees in my drive way and a few branches hang over to nextdoors drive way, Do I need to ask their permission to cut down my own trees?

Not to cut the trees, but technically you do to go on their land in order to do it.
No harm in letting them know?
Shame more people aren't so obliging/considerate too!
You may need council approval to cut down any trees. Describe them as a hedge, and you shouldn't have that problem.
This may help ...Good luck

Heathfield's comment is only true if you live in a Conservation Area, or if there are existing TPOs on the trees.
You'd know if either of those situations applied to you, I assume.
