how do i find out if and when someone has died

i have just been told that an old friend that i havent seen for about 20 years has died but i cant seem to find any info about this without paying a small fortune. does anyone know how i can get this info for free because i dont want to be sending flowers etc if this is not true. the trouble is i dont know where they live, i think its in Nottinghamshire? but i have no address.

THANKS Mc Fluff and Yvonne youve both been a very good help to me, its good to know there are ppl out there who will put their selves out for others.
just to keep you informed i have decided to send flowers etc to his widow and leave it to them to contact me if they want to, after all these years i think i might be intruding if i knocked on the door.

Shocked to see this.I worked with him many years ago at Scandura in Cleckheaton.Just seen in my local paper that his mum died last week.What did he die of?
