Hi everyone, my cousin turned 9 a week ago and is coming to stay with me tonight. Any ideas what time I should be putting him to bed?

I have a nine year old daughter, and bedtime depends on what we are doing and if she has school the next day. If she is at school, i like her to be in bed for  bet 8pm and 8.30pm. Holiday time is more flexible. It might be a good idea to ask his parent(s) what time they advise to put him to bed.  Most of all, enjoy having him to stay. It should be fun.

His mum is in hospital which is why he is coming to stay! I was thinking 8pm since I need him up by 7am to get ready for school (we live the other side of town to him). Thanks a lot.
Eeeek - that time should be fine. Perhaps be a little prepared for the fact he may be a little unsettled ( due to his mum being in hospital) so, if you know his bedtime routine, it might be a good idea to try and stay along those lines. My daughter loves to have a bath and then to have a bedtime story before she goes to sleep. She also like to have a side light on, and then i go and switch it off when she is asleep.  If i have any of her friends to sleep over, i also leave the landing light on, and the door open - just in case they wake in the night and are disorientated. ( hope your cousin's mum gets better soon )
I would say 8:00pm at the latest, he could then lay in bed having a read until he drops off to sleep & I bet that wouldn't be too long.
It never ceases to amaze me how people on this board are so helpful, informative, resourceful, and just - well - nice! I feel I could ask anything and I'd receive a well-informed and/or sympathetic answer. That's the beauty of it...

I agree Clare A and thats why I knew I could ask for genuine advice!

Thanks a lot everyone, in the end we agreed 8.30 and he went to bed no problem at all

In our house it is right after eastenders. No ifs and buts.
I agree that the 9-year old should be in bed for 9pm, with allowances for school holidays and weekends etcetera.  I'd also suggest that there should be a period of "wind-down" time before bed-time. Expect a bit of opposition because some kids are still out and about at 10pm, but try to be consistent.
