This system can 'de-tune' the same engine to give better mpg or better performance. Things that can be varied physically are valve size, compression ratio, piston shape etc. Additionally, the management system can change air/fuel mixture, quantity of the same, valve timing and even response to the accelerator pedal now that engines are moving away from a direct connection between the two.
All the above combine to give the manufacturer the performance it wants for different models. I run a 2 litre turbo diesel which has 3 different power outputs according to which model it's put in and is governed by the management system.
