I am trying to free up space on my laptop by getting rid of some programs that I no longer use, If i just dump them in the recycle bin a message shows "this will only delete the icon to remove the programe use add or remove programs" , When I go to control panel add/remove programs they are not listed so how can I get rid of them?

If you know where they are put them into a new folder named 'anything' and put the folder in the recycle bin.
Go to start/ All programs and check out the entry for the program you wish to delete as it may have its own uninstaller option.
You will not free up much space putting a few programs in the recycle bin.

The things that REALLY take up space are video and movie files.

If you have any videos or movies either back them up to CD or DVD, or delete them if you dont want them.

Make sure you clear out your recycle bin as while files are still in there they are taking up space.

The other option is to buy an external hard drive.

It plugs into your USB port and is very easy to use.

You can move files to the external drive and that will free up space on your hard disk.

thanks for your answers, I dont have any movies or video but have lots of music files (about 150) and quite a few photos, do these take alot of space ?
You are not deleting the programs properly.
Go to Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and do it that way.
Music files don't take much space. Some programs take huge amounts of your hard drive.
One of the best ways to remove programs (better than Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel) is Revo Uninstaller

http://www.revouninstaller.com/

It's free.
it would help to know what the progs are

add remove is the "usual" way - but not all progs make changes to the system - and can just be deleted
