Removing Milk from Carpet
5 Answers
On Saturday my 2 year old poured a cup of milk over the carpet. I cleaned it with hot soapy water and that removed the stain. However last night (monday) when I got in from work the carpet was stinking. I have tried again hot water mixed with Vanish and followed that up with a fabric freshener (fabreze type) - these where all that I had in the house. This morning the carpet was stinking again.

Good luck

A solution of bicarb is supposed to be good for getting rid of smells but I havent tried it on the carpet although it works well in the fridge and microwave

Ok not so much of the wetting at this stage because if the carpet doesnt dry that will also cause a smell. Try and dry off the stain then put lots of dry bicarbonate of soda and rib it in. Leave overnight then vacuum or sweep it up. If smell persists repeat. If the acutual mark is gone then you need to get the carpet dry. Dry with hairdryer if necessary. I have had success with this method everytime.
As milk is alkailne you will need to use an acid to counteract it. Firstly, blot stain with white vinegar on a clean cloth - be generous as this should take away the awful smell. Leave for a couple of hours.
Next, mix a solution of one part white vingegar to 3 parts warm water scrub in well & blot with kitchen paper. When dry scatter & rub in several tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda, leave overnight then hoover. if smell still persists repeat this process once more.
