The answer is a number.

Thought it might be 39 for '39 Steps' but according to my searches that was in 1935 not 1939

The only film of his for 1939 was Jamaica Inn

Are you sure the year isn't earlier?

If so it could be "Number Seventeen"

I think the only films that relate to the year 1939 are Jamaica Inn and possibly Rebecca

And, without looking too hard, the only other number one I see is number seventeen made in 32

Although the IMDB says 1939 and the actual DVD (which I possess says 1935) I did recently see the film year as 1939!
