As for shops, don't hold your breath : it's probably less widely acepted than it is here. No mention here of "North" America - isn't Visa an American company?

I think you'd be unlikely to get it accepted in shops in the USA. Visa is an american company but while their credit cards are widely accepted debit cards are a different matter. Especially ones like Solo and Electron which are specifically designed to limit spending and to prevent the user going overdrawn; this means extra checking via phone lines with your bank account every time you use it and this is why I think it is unlikely to be accepted in the USA (international calling etcetera). I would suggest contacting your bank before you go.
You will have trouble with electron cards but switch/maestro are fine - also on another note be aware that most of the atms over there charge you for using them much the same as the ones we have here in pubs and shops do. I managed to find one at a supermarket called Publix which didn't charge you to use it - just to let you know.
