Legal question about noise control

When we stayed in Marrakech we were woken up each morning (very early) by the most awful screechy siren sounds. It turned out it was a muezzin (the equivalent of Christians with their church bells). I have been so grateful that the mosque close to where we live does not emit the same repellant sound...until this morning at 3.45am. Does anyone know if this is permitted? I certainly hope there is a law (or bye law?) against it.

The legal answer is that it could constitute a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The way that Act is implemented is through the local authority - talk the environmental people at your local council.
If they won't take action, your only other remedy is to take out a civil case under common law - to prove (or not) an unlawful interference with your enjoyment of your property. That, of course, costs your money to proceed with.

Wouldn't the fact that Islam is a religion, & any religion is protected under law?

MWB, I think you missed the point. Religions are multi-faceted. Some aspects may be protected but if it becomes a nuisance to ordinary citizens there canl be legal protection to uphold their rights wherever the nuisance comes from.
