What happens to make your joints click. My knees click when i sit down and I can make my fingers click. I can even make my jaw click although that does hurt sometimes so i tend not to. But what is it that actually clicks? This morning I was lying in bed, not moving and my knee just clicked for no reason. Why?
The click (I seem to recall but will be happily corrected) is caused by the synovial fluid filling the gap that carbon dioxide bubbles create in the in the joint causing a pop as the joint is stretched.
Apparently its pefectly normal and does not cause arthritis, despite the old wive's tale.
I assume one of the bubbles burst when you were lying in bed.
With most joints, the cracking noise is caused by the rapid formation and subsequent bursting of bubbles in the fluid surrounding and lubricating the joint (synovial fluid).
