People to visit an old lady in Cwmbran Wales

We need people to visit an old lady with dementia in Cwmbran. We would prefer people who have had police checks. We are offering �7.50 to �10 an hour.
If you know anyone in the Newport, Cwmbran area please could you forward this information?
Perhaps you know of a local newspaper that we could advertise this in? (Not the Wouth Wales Argus, too expensive).

I live in Scotland and the WRVS do visits like this - it would be much safer than paying some person to visit.

Churches also do visiting.

If she is in a home maybe they will be able to guide you.

With regards Wolf 63's suggestion of the WRVS they just have nothing but a lunch club and they do not even have a phone number for that.

I realise that CRB checks ought to be essential but so far I have not been able to find anyone at all despite the fact that we are prepared to pay for these services. We are desperate. She will be forcibly dragged off to an old people's home to be miserable for the rest of her life if we cannot get people to visit her..

Our OAP home is fun with inmates well cared/catered for. Communal menus (akin to school dinners - loverly). Board games/visitors, nursing 24/7. Coach trips to theatres/sites/concerts/suggestions/visiting musicians/talented peers:

She hates all that stuff. We cannot even get her to go out to a dae centre anymore, she just wants to be in her own home and her self respect is bound up with being the mistress of her own home.

try putting an advert in the local shop its a lot cheaper than the paper. Also if your paying for the CRB check go directly to the police and pay them, if you do it over the net you'll pay loads and i got mine done for �10

We are just not in a position to put ads in the local shops, we do ont live in that area, I am on crutches after foot surgery. If I could find someone to put up such an advet, but I do not know anyone in the right area.

Contact agents for part-time nurses.....they'd be glad of the extra money. Put advert in hospital nurses accommodation.

i have just emailed a local councillor in hopes that she will be able to get the word out, perhas I can persuade her to put up ads in local hospitals etc.

Can you not contact social services in her area and ask them to assess her for a home help?

I know there are agencies but they work out very expensive and they have a nasty habit of not wanting to help if local social services does not want them to.
Social Sevices stand to save a lot of money if they can put my mother in law away as she owns her own house so that will be sold to pay for her stay in an old people's home.

Apart from Age Concern's Befriending Service I can't immediately think of any other organisation who will offer the service you require. You know her address. Why not Google the addresses/websites of the local churches in Newport to see if any of their members can help?
Why not write a Round Robin letter to some of her neighbours - you must be able to guess their nearby house numbers, explaining what services you need, what you are prepared to pay. They may be unaware of your m-i-l's needs and could set up a rota. I suspect one of the problems involved for people participating in such a venture is that such commitments always tend to increase as an individual's condition deteriorates and people are worried about the responsibility this will put on them when they have they own families to look after and be concerned about.
Could you check whether any of the local secondary school's or youth clubs have Voluntary groups who visit the elderly? Probably not ideal as young people would find it very difficult knowing how to deal with dimentia but worth a try. Hope you manage to find a solution. Know how difficult it is when an elderly relative lives so far away from the rest of their family.

We cannot presume anymore than we already have on the neighbours, she needs someone every day if social sevices are to be stopped from dragging her off to an old people's home.

I have just placed an advert in the local job centre, I think that is our only hope now.

I could do with local contacts but I just do not have any apart from people who are not interested in a part time job. The schools are virtually empty now because of the summer holiday or I would try to develop contacts that way.
