Regarding protien drinks (stuff you see in sports shops) you have got to be very careful with these. Too much protein in your system will damage your kidneys and you could end up on dialysis. Remember that some people will not put on bulk no matter how much they train. Have a chat with your GP.

I started weight training about 3 years ago because I was always skinny for my height. I, like you, noticed more tone and strength but when I came to weigh myself I wasn't gaining anything. If anything I lost some weight. The trick is, when you're an ectomorph or have a small bone structure, you need to lift heavier weights with fewer reps. Overload your muscles faster at maybe 8 reps instead of 10 or 12. Always step up your routine with more weight or in other words don't just ponder on the same weight for weeks or months. Also switch up exercises to give your routine some variation or your muscles will get "bored" on the same old exercises. Lastly your muscles need food and energy to grow. Add the whey protein shakes to your diet after a workout but in the mean time greatly increase your overall coloric intake by feeding your face. After I started doing this my weight and size slowly began to rise to the point where I shadow my old self. Good luck.
