Jno, we may have been in keeping with scientific theory to our own date, it is perhaps possible that new theories have arisen since lol! science moves on so quickly that perhaps we are right, yet legend seems to have found a new source? Legend, are we both wrong? whilst the hair may not reflect the ultraviolet light, this does not necessarily mean that the shorter fur underneath may not be the cause of the polar bears whiteness? is wiki out of date? genuinely interested, not taking the p1ss out of anyone!! :)

I also recall that the vast majority of polar bears are 'left-handed' [should that be left pawed??]. Like 80% or more

Just occured 2 me.... why would a polar bear need to smell a human? perhaps inuits? ( im not sure thats the current pc term though!) Are polar bears being hunted the same way other endangered species are???

Although the polar bear’s coat appears white, each individual hair is actually a clear, hollow tube. Some of the sun’s rays bounce off the fur, making the polar bear’s coat appear white. During the summer months, adult bears molt, or gradually shed their coats and grow new ones, which look pure white. By the following spring, the sunshine has caused their coats to turn a yellowish shade.
