Cervical Mucous at wrong time?

Hello,
We're trying for a baby, and I know that one of the ways to detect ovulation is to look out for the clear, stretchy egg-white like mucous. And that this is supposed to happen at around day 14 of a normal 28 day cycle.

Well, my confusion is that I consistently have this discharge about 7 days after my period, and then it stops around day 10!

Does this mean that I'm ovulating around day 7, even though my periods are normally 28 days long? It doesn't really make sense to me and I've never heard of anybody ovulating this early.

Is it possible to ovulate so early with a normal 28 day cycle? I'd love to know what's going on and would appreciate any advice.

why don't you get one of those ovulation tests from a chemist?

You have this discharge 7days after the onset of your period or 7days after the end of your period?

Do you have mucous during your period?

It is likely that the mucous has nothing to do with ovulation, depending upon the answers that you give to the above.

Thanks sara3, yes I could get the ovulation tests, that's a good suggestion. But I was just really put off by them when we used them before my last pregnancy.

I never seemed to be using them at the correct time (even though I followed all the instructions about when to test), as they never predicted ovulation. I did go on to become pregnant, so I know I must've ovulated at least once!

And we ended up spending soo much money on them.

sqad617, yes, maybe I wasn't clear enough. I get this discharge around 7 days after the onset of my period, so about day 7 of my cycle. (Rather than day 14, which I thought was when it was meant to happen!)

I've never noticed the mucous during my period. But maybe you're right about it not having anything to do with my period.

I find it a bit confusing as this is the only time that I'm getting this kind of discharge. Thanks for your answer.

You are counting your period from the first sign of it, depending how heavy your periods are, the wall of the womb may have started breaking down a day or two earlier and so you would be further into the cycle than you thought.

From wiki:
It is normal for the day of ovulation to vary from the average, with ovulation anywhere between the tenth and nineteenth day being common.

Thanks carrot99, that's interesting. I never thought of the start of a period being anything other than the first moment I'm aware of it.
