You will then be told how much RAM (random access memory) you have and by what amount you can increase it to.
I recently did the same and it told me I could increase it to 2GB Max.
I purchased two 1GB memory strips of the type Crucial recommended, and put them into my computer myself, not a hard thing to do.
I recommend Crucial they were loads cheaper than the famous high street outlet, and they arrived the very next day.
Hope this helps, I must add however that I did this upgrade on a desktop computer not a laptop, but I shouldn't think it would be any more difficult, perhaps others will tell you.
Incidentally I also purchase an anti static wrist strap, costing 1.99.

The memory (RAM) on your PC should not have any bearing on whether you can download video from a camcorder. It sounds more like you do not have enough hard drive space left on the PC to store the images.
Can you post the exact message you get when your attempt to download fails,it will help anyone who answers this question to give you a definitive answer.

You could purchase an external hard drive that plugs into a USB slot on your existing PC,then save the images from the camcorder onto that. You then have the added benefit of being able to take the portable hard drive wherever you like and can show the images to others on their own computers. The other option is to buy a bigger capacity internal hard drive, but that would involve having to fit it into your PC and install all your programs (including the operating system) onto it. If you google for 'portable hard drives' or 'external hard drives' you should get some idea of the price range.
