I always thought this was just a phrase but having my 'heart broken' recently have been experiencing actual pain and tightness in my chest, in the region of my heart! Why is this?

It is in fact a form of grief that you suffered and there are, in differing variations several physical symptoms that will be encountered. Andy Hughes has pointed these symptoms out and I can add, from personal experience many years ago, that the pain can be overwhelming.

On a similar tack there are symptoms associated with falling in love which are reasonably similar. Lets hope that before long you will exchange your feelings of grief for these.
