Selling private reg and going back to original

hi all, I recently bought a car which has come with a private plate on it, it doesn't say anything in particular, presume it was initials of a previous owner, anyway i was wondering if i get a quote for it and its worth me selling would i then have to pay to have the original reg transferred back to the car? and if so how much? thanks in advance, lucy
