Does anyone know why the umpires stand back and let the players beat the crap out of each other ?
It wouldn't be tolerated in any other sport - except boxing of course.

I think its a historical part of the game. Its something the spectaors expect to see.

They have toned it down in the past few years - stopping it when someone hits the ice or if the fight with gloves on???

However it is brainless as both fighters will be excluded from the ice.
