What is the difference between a tool and a utensil? What would a pair of scissors be or nutcrackers.

Not too sure, but I think the scissors and nutcrackers would be regarded as tools, as the word utensils is normally used for kitchen/cooking equipment. Hope you find a more certain answer.
scissors and nutcrackers in my opinion are tools as they change the state of what they are used on, knives,forks,spatulas etc. do not, they basically transport but do not alter anything so are utensils. ;-))
