my new lappy had 3 month's Norton anti-virus cover, which has just expired. I thought it would still protect me but not give me updates (an older version did) but it's just shut down. I have Vista Home Premium.

should I clear Norton off (and do I need a removal tool) and download something else? AVG? what would you recommend? links appreciated.

many thanks :o)

I would normally recommend AVG for free anti virus, but just recently there seems to be an increase in people saying they are having problems with AVG and vista, for that reason I would suggest avira now

Use above link to remove Norton from your system.
I removed mine and have Avira Freeware installed instead, along with Superantispyware and Malwarebytes.
You can try AVG or Avast but it is all about preferences and compatibility.

okay, Norton successfully zapped!

as for Avira, I'm not sure which download I need from that link. is it one of the 2 "softpedia" links? is RO correct option? (and not the "stopzilla" links at all?)

sorry, I have my pointy hat on with the big D.

coool, I am gonna be drunk when I cash all these in :)
zac,

avast should remove the normal way with add remove programs

1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Open Add/Remove Programs
3) Find Avast in the Programs list and highlight it
4) Click Remove and follow the prompts to uninstall Avast

if it doesn't then there is a removal tool, but try through add remove programs first

bloody msn, it's a nightmare.
windows live messenger can be removed from add remove programs, to get rid of MSN messenger totally again goto add remove programs, click on add/remove windows components on the left side, then scroll down to the bottom of the list and take the tick out from "wndows messenger"
