MargeB, I sincerely hope this isn't another one of your 'the earth is flat' leg pulls.  However, picture a person sitting in a chair that someone has pushed into spinning. He is revolving in one plane at a given speed.  If that person is then pushed along the floor at, say 2 mph, while still spinning, that is yet another plane and his total speed is the combination of the spinning and speed along the office floor.  Now, if someone pushes him into (use your imagination) an elevator that is quite long and begins to ascend (or descend) while still spinning and still moving horizontally, yet another plane is introduced at yet another speed.  This is similar, is it not, to the many different directions (planes) and speeds at which the earth is moving a la Loosehead's description.  If you object to the word plane, I would then suggest the use of vector if it would make you happier.... At any rate, this thread has reached the end of its usefullness and interest...

I gave the first answer, and I stick by it. No answer given here is of any relevance, as the question does not state where the speed should be taken to be relative to.
