capital letters

Can anyone solve a dispute re the use of capital letters?  I believed that when writing subject names eg Mathematics, Physics etc one used a capital letter at the start.  I have been told that the modern way ( do I hear lots of harrumphing from Middle England?) is to use lower case letters.

Subject names have never been nouns that need to be capitalised, unless the subjects are 'proper nouns' such as 'English', 'Latin', 'French'  etc.

Ditto what Emily Ball said.  She is totally spot on.

Specialist publications may choose to capitalise words that are thought important in their particular field, so Physics might take a capital P in educational textbooks, say, or school magazines. But in mainstream publications this isn't usual.
