Hey Bart,

I totally respect your wishes, but Youth Hostels are not actually that bad.  Most now are very secure and you can get individual rooms, or twin rooms if you're going with a friend.  But if you have that fear, it's probably best to stay away from them.

I've never been to Romania, so I can't offer a personal recommendation, but this Lonely Plant website looks pretty good!

I'm sorry to post a rather unhelpful response, but I do hope the website is of some use to you.  :-)

I went to Romania about four years ago and it was great. Unless prices have rocketed, you should be able to stay in hotels very cheaply. We stayed in the de luxe suite (I've lived in smaller flats) in a hotel in Timisoara and it was under 20 a night . We also stayed in a cheap hostel in Cluj Napoca for about 9 a night -other hotels were about 15 a night. You can be robbed anywhere but I didn't find Romania particularly bad. In fact, I lost my wallet in a cafe, went back the next day and it had been handed in.
You should have a great trip, it's a lovely country, the people are really friendly (too friendly, they do have a habit of offering strong liquor at all times of the day!) and it shouldn't cost a fortune.
